Help Edinburgh University String Orchestra!

Donation protected
The University of Edinburgh's only string ensemble, EUSO, delivers concert performances twice a year, which have been described as ‘truly polished’ and ‘outstanding’. This year, we are delighted to return to in-person rehearsals and concerts (as Scottish restrictions allow), but we need your support in order to do so.

Like many charity organisations in the arts world, EUSO has been hit hard by covid. In March 2020 we were one week away from performing our culminating concert when lockdown began and were left to pay conductors and numerous other expenses without hopes of recuperating the lost funds through ticket sales.

This year, our usual university rehearsal and concert venue, the Reid Concert Hall, is unavailable to the university’s music societies. Thus, we have been forced to find alternative venues at significant cost. Without your help, we will be unable to hire these venues, leaving us with no space to rehearse or perform.

EUSO is passionate about engaging with the local Edinburgh community and helping to spread the joy of music to everyone. We frequently work with care homes and charities and perform pop- up concerts in public spaces. EUSO also organises interactive education projects for schools, helping to spark an interest in music and allowing students to engage with and explore instruments up close. Last year we planned to embark on an outreach tour, visiting communities on the outskirts of Edinburgh to perform and teach. We would love for this to be possible this year, but we need your help to be able to fund these projects.

EUSO creates a space where musicians of different cultural backgrounds can come together and share their love of string music. To this end, we aim to perform new compositions by emerging artists from a variety of backgrounds, but laws over hiring copyrighted music makes it expensive for us to showcase their talents.

Any contribution you could possibly make would be incredibly valuable to us. Your donation would be used to help pay our wonderful conductors and workshop leaders, hire rehearsal spaces and concert venues, perform licenced music from underrepresented composers, and continue with our outreach programme.

£10 will cover travel expenses to a care home. £18 is enough to book a rehearsal space for an hour. £50 will help us to hire music. Our goal is to raise £600, please help us get there!
