Esther Aferi's Memorial

My sister Esther Anobea (Awo) Aferi passed away on June 12, 2017. Her passing was tragic, sudden and happened on her first trip to the U.S. from our homeland, Ghana, West Africa to attend a Rotary Club convention and for some very well deserved R & R. Her trip to the US was made in two legs with a layover in Paris where she complained to her best friend of swollen legs and some discomfort but thought nothing of it. She arrived in the US, went through immigration and on her way to the baggage area collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital where they diagnosed that she had suffered a massive heart attack from a blood clot. The doctors quickly performed surgery and implanted a stent in her artery. They informed us (the family) that it was routine to be awake and responsive after this surgery and then discharged within 3 days. However, Esther was awake, but not responsive.

They concluded that there was some brain damage, and urged us to pray for healing as it was hard to predict the healing process. 5 days went by and there was no improvement in Esther’s condition; she was still in a coma. We continued to pray and stayed hopeful. In the early hours of Monday, June 12 we received the call we couldn’t have imagined. What? How, how, how? Unimaginable, but it had happened, the good Lord had beckoned His daughter/angel to come home. Everyone she spoke to about her trip emphasizes how excited she was about it. 2 days prior to leaving Ghana, she saw her 80 year old mother off on her trip to Atlanta to visit our sister Angela. She was so excited about a long awaited reunion with the family and meeting Angela’s 3 children for the first time. She had planned a surprise visit to come see me and her 17 month old nephew, who she affectionately referred to as (our obroni) in Charlotte.

Esther, a very strong Christian, in recent years had maintained a disciplined lifestyle. She ate healthy foods and ensured that she was getting adequate exercise regularly. Though burdened with the recent and unexpected extra responsibility of having to care for an older sister who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she kept her spirits up and never complained. It was her nature to be a reliable resource to all family and numerous friends. Her natural beauty, seemingly endless generosity, jovial demeanor and highly infectious smile are legendary. In our estimation, Esther was an exceptional individual and her love for God’s work and serving humanity are extra special. She was a talented graphic designer who used her training to help and support many others. She gave of herself through her work with several organizations including the Christian Medical Missions Resource Foundation, the Medical Mission of Ghana, the Ghana Samaritan’s Purse program and more recently the Accra East branch of the Rotary Club of Ghana.

Everyone who knew Esther is reeling from this sudden loss. Her tragic passing is incomprehensible, especially given her notable generosity and apparent high energy level. Many have asked how they can help and this request is to help ease the family of the great expense involved in burying our dearly departed with dignity. Funeral and burial takes place on July 8, 2017 at the Chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home. Esther comes from a big family that is located in every corner of this great big Earth. Many are now preparing themselves, attaining the necessary travel visas and looking to officially witness her formal burial. All donations will go towards her funeral and burial arrangements. Any additional funds above that will go to Samaritan’s Purse in Ghana, a Charity that was close to Esther’s heart.

On behalf of my family, I thank each and every one for their contribution made in honor of this very exceptional person. Esther helped many during her time on Earth, and we wish to honor her memory by extending her work.

Thank you and may Our Almighty God Bless You.
