The pace, complexity and uncertainty of our fast changing world is challenging for young people.
Large numbers of school-aged students are struggling to cope with increasingly stressful school and life demands. Mental health issues - depression, anxiety, suicide - are at record levels and rising. 

Research has shown that half of all mental health conditions emerge by the age of 14, with three quarters emerging by 24 years of age.

The good news is that schools, both here and around the world, have begun to incorporate the latest advances in behavioural sciences (such as Positive Psychology, Neuroscience, Emotional Intelligence) into their curriculums and organisational cultures to better prepare students for their future work and life.

Over a decade of evidence-based research show that these initiatives help protect students against problems at school, future mental health challenges and develops personal qualities and habits that help them live happy, purposeful and fulfilling lives.

While many schools are implementing these resilience and wellbeing programs, we strongly believe that additional intensive and ongoing training for teachers and other adult stakeholders is vital to their success.
 
SELschools is being established as an independent, non-profit charity organisation providing free or low cost Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) training for teachers, staff and parents of early childhood, primary and secondary schools.

The funds from this campaign will go towards establishing the legal and financial structures of SELschools including Australian Charities & Not-For-Profit Commission registration. 

Once SELschools is up and running, individuals, corporates, trusts and foundations will be approached for funding on the following basis:

​1) SEL in schools is a proactive, preventive, systemic and strategic approach to counter the growing social problems and economic cost caused by declining mental health in the community
​​
2) Nearly two decades of evidence-based research by CASEL demonstrates significant and positive benefits for students, teachers and schools

3) Anecdotal evidence from principals, teachers, staff, students and parents of Australian schools where there has been a comprehensive roll-out of SEL suggest overwhelming support for the academic, behavioural and school climate benefits

4) Effective and ongoing SEL training for teachers, staff and parents is a vital component of successfully implemented resilience and wellbeing initiatives that is often not well resourced. Funds donated to SELschools will address this issue.
