ESPERANZA is a musical stage play depicting one man’s struggle to survive incarceration in the Texas penitentiary system. After a solid attempt to turn his previous criminal history around, having a legitimate job and attending college, Robert Vega, Jr. was unexpectedly faced with an extensive prison sentence due to a life-changing event.
Robert found that being behind bars for almost ten years was so much more than paying his penance to society. In spite of being in solitary confinement for six years, he managed to maintain a personal vow to invest daily into self-improvement through mental, physical and spiritual enrichment and growth. Finally earning freedom in 2008, Robert came out a new man driven to succeed. While missing out on his twenties, he not only was behind the times in fashion, pop culture and music, but also technological advances. Attending college for a music degree proved extremely challenging as he knew nothing about the science of music or the even the internet. His tenacity and passion further proved to be inspiring to many as he was determined to successfully complete his education while establishing a personal training/empowerment business, and being a competitive boxer.
ESPERANZA is the co-creation of both Mr. Vega and director extraordinaire David Grabarkowitz who has extensive history and experience with Broadway play production as well as screen writing. At a precarious time where prison reform is a hot-button issue, Robert’s firsthand experience lends a perspective that is unrivaled. His self-discipline, determination and drive have been inspirational to many but through ESPERANZA will prove to reach the masses on an unprecedented scale. Financial support of this project will ensure that we can first expose large numbers of Texans to his story and ultimately be featured in New York on Broadway.
Currently planning on a whirlwind Texas tour in 2020, we are slated to present this production to a minimum of ten cities within a month. The cost for this endeavor includes compensating a top notch support team, a number of professional musicians, stage production, lighting and sound professionals as well as travel expenses.
