Who they are
These kids are examples of Haiti’s best and brightest. Hardworking, bright, motivated individuals who dream of making a difference in their country. They are all students who have a passion for technology and are current students studying computer science at ESIH (Ecole Superieure d’Infotronique d’Haiti) in Port au Prince, Haiti. Each of them envisions how increasing access to technology for all people in Haiti will help improve lives.
“We live in an underdeveloped country, the poorest in the Caribbean. As young people involved in the development of our country, we choose the multidimensional discipline Computer Science because we are certain that technology is a tool that has allowed many countries to experience an economic development almost exponential.”
What, When and Where
They fly to Boston on February 14th 2018 to participate in the Harvard National Model UN (HNMUN) with some 3000 other participants from all over the world. HNMUN is considered the premier collegiate model UN experience and we are very proud of these 5 young people on being invited to attend!
“Harvard National Model UN seeks as it’s mission to educate the next generation of leaders in international affairs from among students who are already outstanding leaders. It is our mission to bring together and educate the next generation of leaders in international affairs—and, indeed, to bring together and educate students who are already outstanding leaders.”
“This session will be held in downtown Boston from Thursday, February 15, through Sunday, February 18, 2018. Throughout the conference, delegates will gain insight into the workings of the United Nations by actively participating in the resolution of important global issues. Participants will not only work with hundreds of other motivated college students with the common goals of furthering international awareness and building consensus, but will also work within a lively social setting.”
Social Venture Challenge
This team has opted to compete in the Social Venture Challenge at HNMUN and they will present a project that addresses the “Integration of Women in the field of Information Technology and Communication in Haiti”.
“The Social Venture Challenge is a program that allows HNMUN delegates to build teams and submit their plans for actual social ventures to make an impact on their local communities. Before the conference, participating delegates develop a social venture idea to improve their home community. Then, at the conference, they will present their ideas to the SVC team, who will review them and select the most effective and feasible social ventures. The winners of the Social Venture Challenge are then nominated to be Resolution Fellows. They will receive a grant of up to US $3,000 and strong advisory support for their ventures. There are already more than 150 Fellows on all 6 inhabited continents working in diverse, high-impact fields such as education, healthcare, human rights, water resources, and sustainability.”
How you can help
These young people are working hard to earn the funds to pay their way. But Haiti is a difficult place to make ends meet and they have little means to cover the housing costs and/or purchase winter clothes for the Boston weather. We are hoping to raise $2300 in 14 days to help with these expenses. We hope you will join us.
We will use the funds directly to defer the hotel costs and we are taking donations in kind or dollars to send a set of appropriate winter outer wear per student (one puffy jacket, one fleece liner, one hat, gloves and long underwear).
The team leader, James Declerus, is a bright, principled and highly motivated young man. I have come to know him as he has been instrumental in helping us navigate the cultural and technological challenges of starting a computer lab at a K- 13 school in Hinche, Haiti. He is someone on track to be a changemaker in his community and his country. I hope you will join me in helping James and his team reach their potential and make their dreams happen through this unique and inspirational opportunity to participate in the Harvard National Model UN Conference.
