In late March of this year, Erich Mueller was diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma, meaning skin cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes in his body. They found that the affected lymph nodes were all centralized in his left armpit. Doctors at Gundersen were able to perform surgery to remove these lymph nodes, and a large portion of skin surrounding the original Melanoma site in his upper arm. Soon after this successful surgery he began a journey through radiation and chemotherapy. Erich endured this all on his own, as COVID-19 has restricted anyone from entering the hospital with him.
On June 29th Erich got to ring the bell at the Cancer Center, he had completed his month long course of radiation.
On July 3rd, Erich got down on one knee at his Grannie's home on Green Lake and asked his beloved Alyssa to be his wife. He caught her off guard with the proposal thanks to his line to get her alone outside... "let's go get Vellie (their adorable 8 month pup) to pee". Alyssa was ready with freshly manicured fingers (thanks, Tess!), and now proudly wears Erich's grandmother's engagement ring.
On July 28th Erich went in to the hospital for a PET scan after finding a lump in his chest. Two days later Erich received news that changed everything. The lump in his chest was benign, but the scans of his brain lit up. Doctors found several dozen inoperable tumors in his brain. At this appointment Erich was given 6 months to live.
Doctors immediately sprang into action and started him that very afternoon on an intensive 15 day course of radiation. They are encouraged by his young and strong body, and are hoping to begin immunotherapy treatment mid August to buy him more time. Erich and Alyssa have decided to move up their wedding date, and will marry on October 24th surrounded by their dearest friends and family.
It goes without saying that this journey has been impossibly difficult, and they have a long road ahead. There are no words to do this justice. Erich is far too young, and good, and humble, and kind. Cancer is unfair, and hateful, and a thief.
