Protecting Our Reds...

Keswick Red Squirrel Group is a small group of local people who are passionate about protecting our red squirrel population in this area of the Lake District. The native red squirrel is an endangered species, mainly due to the deadly pox from the grey squirrel, a non-native species which carries the pox but is not affected by it.

Since we set up the group in March 2020 we have engaged with our local community and visitors to the area, increasing awareness of the plight of our red squirrels. People are passionate about the little reds and are keen to support our work.

Our team is entirely voluntary and our rangers are mostly self-funding in the purchase of their equipment, insurance, travel costs etc. We now have several feeder monitors who are a great support to the rangers and this has helped us extend our range of work locations.

Our earlier fundraising campaigns were to raise funds urgently needed for food as each feeder costs £100 per year to maintain - as well as some equipment such as feeders and cameras. Ongoing donations help us to quickly respond in new areas and enable us to maintain our existing operations.
