Riding the waves of dementia

As the environment is in great decline, I realize how much Mark was ahead not only in his thinking, but mostly in his actions on what we need to do to secure a safe future for our children. It is sad to have lost his voice on this very important topic. But he made a big difference with his work for Surfrider Foundation and in his direct environment. His legacy is in place and his book " Riding the Waves of Dementia" will remind us of that. Mark was diagnosed with a rare form of young dementia called Posterior Cortical Atrophy, 5 years ago though the first symptoms started at least 10 years ago. He has gradually been losing all his abilities expept his memory in a way we could have never imagined. He requires help with every move he makes because he lost all visual/spatial memory and many other memories and processing functions. It is very much a locked up syndrome and he is often very scared because he cannot rely on his faculties. He tries really hard but even trying is becoming impossible. As the disease progresses, the care becomes more intensive, and for this we need to spread it out over more caregivers. We thank you for your continuous support as we realize it has been a long road. We could not have done it without you. It humbles us and know that we are grateful for the support, love and care.
Mark passed away on May 26th 2020.
