NEPAL STANDS FOR A NEW FUTURE!
Nepal is famous for the courage of the Sherpas, the Gurkhas fighting force, and the warmth and hospitality of its people.
Nepal is equally well known for losing 10,000 young women to human trafficking each year. These women are sold into the brothels of of Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta. Old women are tortured and burnt as witches in remote areas and organ harvesting from the very poor is prevalent.
This project began with the intention of ending child trafficking in Nepal.
The question for us was how do you tackle this issue effectively given the degree of poverty in the country and the size of the industry.
Firstly we chose education as the access - the education program had to be transformational. One that allows people to distinguish buried beliefs that are disempowering them and gives them the capacity to let these beliefs go.
We raised sponsorships and arranged for groups of teachers, politicians and women who had escaped the brothels to go down to New Delhi to do the program.
Two of the people that travelled to New Delhi came from a connection with Nepal that began in 1971 when Anne Rittman met a small beggar, adopted him and sent him to school in Darjeeling.
Ram is pictured here planning a ‘Health Camp (yoga studio) in his village Tilahar after doing this program 2 years ago (he is from the Untouchables). Also pictured is Maya who is planning an Orphanage for lowcast Nepalese children who lost their parents in the Big Earthquake a few years back.
Upon their return to Kathmandu the Nepalese leaders declared they would put a stop to this terrible trade that targets the poor by holding the program for the leadership of Nepal in Kathmandu.
We are partnering the Nepalese to do this in August 2019.
