Empowering Young People Through Exploration

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Frederik Lukac, and I would like to ask for your help to change the lives of young people. The British exploring society provides opportunities for young people to empower them and help them find their power and place in this world. In a world which can often seem crazy, overwhelming and lonely.

My story.
I grew up in a small village, hiding in the hill valleys of Slovakia. Since I can remember, I have spent most of my time outdoors fishing, wild foraging, hiking or climbing mountains with my grandfather. This was my safe space, providing an escape from a life filled with alcohol, and physical and emotional abuse from my parents.
Summers with my grandfather were the most joyful memories I carry with me today. Growing up my grandfather played a major role in my childhood. He was the father figure I needed. And not only that, but he also allowed me to develop a sense of curiosity to explore the unknown, challenge myself and my fears, and understand myself better through that process. Sadly, last year, my grandfather passed away. Our very last conversation still rings vividly in my mind. I made him a promise. Promise to keep exploring the world, and my limitations with a mission to overcome them. To follow in his footsteps, to see the world, and witness the spectacular beauty of wild places, people, culture and customs. And by this process attain a broader perspective on life by experiencing different cultures, meeting people and challenges of discomfort. To understand this world and what it means to be human through the lesson of exploration. And to create the same opportunity for other young people.

I believe that exploration is a quintessential part of developing a better comprehension of ourselves and the world we live in. Exploration allows us to learn lessons of kindness, resilience, compassion, courage and much more. I believe the idea of exploring wild and remote places can be a vital point of transformation for a young person.
That is why I have chosen to support and fundraise for The British Exploring Society.
British Exploring Society with a unique heritage, founded on the belief that challenging experiences can define lives, empowering and equipping young people with the courage, skills, resilience, and determination to make the most of their future.

And in honour of my grandfather who believed in the power of exploration, I will take on an Expedition to Kyrgyzstan trekking across glaciers and mountains of the At-Bashi range. Documenting this 5-week journey of young people and what positive change an experience of exploration can bring into their life. I would like to also organise this fund-raising to help more young people to receive this opportunity.

British Exploring Society prepares and gives young people access to adventures and expeditions to remote locations where they face challenges, gain skills and learn about themselves - as well as acquire knowledge relevant to their lives and to the fragile environments that they explore. The results are transformative – not just in terms of practical skills and resilience, but in a new-found confidence and self-belief that the young people carry forward to their future life.
Exploration brings an opportunity to find our better selves through challenges. It allows us to see ourselves overcoming things we are afraid of. Ultimately, it gives us confidence and helps us to build our belief in ourselves.
