“Everyone has the right to an education.”
Article 26, Universal Declaration of Human Rights- United Nations.

But the education of girls and women in Afghanistan is a severe crisis. Recent prohibitions have denied Afghan women and girls’ access to secondary and higher education, threatening to erase significant progress made over the past two decades. This decision leaves 2.5 million girls and young women without formal education; this number equals the population of the state of New Mexico.
Before these bans on education, Afghanistan had experienced a remarkable increase in enrollment at all education levels. The number of girls in primary school rose from almost zero in 2001 to 10 million in 2018, while over 100,000 female students were enrolled in universities by 2021. However, since September 2021, the education crisis has deepened as girls and women face an indefinite ban on schooling and university education . In response to this these educational bans, since January 2023 Generation of Change has actively supported Afghan girls and women by offering English, math, and computer science courses and by advocating for the fundamental right to education. Despite these efforts, urgent action is needed to ensure the immediate and non-negotiable return to school for all girls and young women in Afghanistan, safeguarding their fundamental right to education. How are we addressing this challenge? Through the ongoing efforts of the Generation of Change organization.

Last year, we addressed the problem by implementing a comprehensive strategy to empower girls through education. Here's a breakdown of our approach:

1. Online Courses: We provided access to online courses covering a variety of subjects essential for academic and personal development. This included English language instruction at different proficiency levels, mathematics, and basic computer skills.

2. Webinars for Scholarships: We organized webinars to educate students about scholarship opportunities, helping them navigate the application process and access financial support for their education.

3. Friendship Writings Circles: We facilitated connections and fostered a sense of community among girls through facilitation of friendship writing circles, encouraging them to reflect on their own experiences and to support each other.

4. Self-Development Courses: : Our self-development courses equipped girls with valuable life skills and strategies for personal growth, empowering them to navigate challenges and reach their full potential.

5: Financial Assistance: We provided financial assistance for internet fees to more than 300 students across two cohorts, each spanning 3 months. This enabled them to connect during classes and access valuable educational resources.

6. Collaboration with Instructors and Teacher Assistants: We collaborated with over 40 volunteer instructors from Afghanistan and other countries, as well as 30 teacher assistants, to deliver high-quality educational content and support to our students.

Through these initiatives, we made significant strides in the empowerment of girls through education, providing them with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed academically and beyond.
