Empower a Girl: Buy a book, gift a book

BUY A BOOK, GIFT A BOOK
Get Girls Who Run the World: 31 CEOs Who Mean Business  for a girl who wouldn't get it otherwise.

A girl cannot be what she cannot see.

Girls need modern working women role models. Girls need to know they belong in the world of invention and company creation. Girls Who Run the World is a book that inspires girls and young women to EXPECT to grow up to be CEOs, founders and leaders.

Did you know:
-Just 6% of Fortune 500 CEOs are female
-Still, only 2% of ALL VC funding goes to female-led start-ups
-23% of middle school girls say they will never achieve their dream career, and this number doubles by high school to 46%

This book is a blueprint for bravery & badassery. I have profiled 31 female entrepreneurs--the women behind  Glossier, 23andMe, Stitch Fix, Rent the Runway, Caribou Bioscience, Soul Cycle, POPSUGAR, Uncharted Power and more--to show girls and young women what is possible. I describe the book as NPR's How I Built This (my fave podcast) in book form for you girl and young women set. The stories are adventures-full of twists, turns, mishaps and epic recoveries!

The back chapters teach girls to read simple financials, write a one-page business plan, file a patent, and brainstorm a business idea.

I am raising funds to donate books to girls in organizations including:
-Junior Achievement (a career-readiness organization holding STEM career workshops including "speed dating" with STEM mentors)
=Black Girls Who Code (Oakland-based org providing after school, summer and regular technology education for African American girls).
-LA Promise GirlsBuild - 65 teams of girls creating products/projects to help their community.
-Girls, Inc. (national org with local chapters focused on empowering girls)
-A Place Called Home (community center serving ~500 young women, ranging from elementary school to college)
-Girls Athletic Leadership School (middle school serving ~300 young women)
-DIY Girls (STEM program serving  ~400 girls per year, ranging from elementary school to high school)
-Step Up (mentorship program serving ~300 high school-aged women in Los Angeles, and more nationally)
-Parent Institute for Quality Education (parent engagement program with whom we served more than 600 high school students in 2018)
-Eva Longoria Foundation College Scholarship Program (40 college-aged women, who are first-gen college students)

I will also distribute books to public libraries in underserved areas.

Here's what you do: Go to your local indie bookstore or online to Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Indie bound orPowell's and buy your daughter or the power gals in your life a copy of Girls Who Run the World: 31 CEOs Who Mean Business. Then,  pledge $20 per book here on this GoFundMe campaign and I will work with the girl-serving organizations to get as many books as the fundraising allows distributed to girls who wouldn't otherwise get opportunity to see role models and be inspired.

To date, I have used funds raised here to buy books for Black Girls Code in the Bay Area. I chose these organizations based on needs they expressed and in some cases having specific upcoming events around STEM/career/entrepreneurship/financial literacy where the books would be particularly useful.

Check out 5,000 girls getting the book at LA Promise's Hello Futures event focused on STEM for
girls from underserved areas.
