Support for the Zabala’s

The Zabala's are easily one of the most caring, loving and helpful families I know.  They are the true definition of selfless.  They always go above and beyond to help others so please join me in doing the same for them.

Emily's Story:
Her fever started on Christmas day, they took her to the doctor on Tuesday 12/26.  She tested negative for flu and had no signs of strep so they didn't test for it. They told Jessica it was a virus that needed to run its course and treat with rest and fluids.

Emily slept round the clock and had fever but no other symptoms. Thursday her fever was gone but by that afternoon she was complaining her legs hurt. By Friday 12/29 the fever was back and she couldn't use her legs. They took her back to the doctor and from there they sent her to St. Joes for additional testing. Tests were administered and they were sent home to await results but shortly after getting home they were called back to the hospital. The test results showed her creatine levels and B.U.N. was 77 when the normal level is 9 or 10. They admitted Emily overnight and ran more tests and during that time they found out the strep culture came back positive. Her muscles and kidney were being affected and she was in a lot of pain.

A team of doctors came to take her to Lurie's Children’s Hospital via ambulance. Where she was put in the ICU because her blood pressure was too low and her heart rate was too high. At this point she couldn’t move, or walk. She was really swollen and couldn’t hold anything down. She stayed in the ICU for several days.

By day 5 all of her levels were back to an acceptable range and she was taken off all of her meds. She had an IV and was still periodically getting a fever. She was able to move around a little with assistance. They believe it all started with the strep infection that spread to her muscles.  By day 10 The antibiotics that they gave her killed all of the infection except for the pocket of fluid built up near her hip. She had a procedure done to clean out the pocket of fluid.

FINALLY on 1/12 after 14 days of being in the hospital Emily was transferred to the Shirley Ryan Rehabilitation Center  where she currently is  and will continue with physical therapy to get her limbs working properly again. Hopefully, sometime within a week or so she can come home.

Phew! This little peanut has been through a LOT in the past few weeks and so have her parents. As a parent myself I can only imagine how stressful this entire situation must be for Jessica and Nate.

If you are able please donate whatever you can to help cut down the costs of the medical expenses for Emily.
