Emergency Relief for Jackson

Donation protected
The people of Jackson, Mississippi, still need clean water!

More than 180,000 Jackson, Mississippi, residents have been without safe water for weeks after significant flooding caused pumps at a local water treatment plant to fail, worsening an already dire clean water disaster.

On September 6, 2022, President Joe Biden declared an emergency and dispatched FEMA to help restore the water treatment plant and distribute emergency relief to Jackson residents. For nearly six weeks, Mississippians have been on a boil water advisory. Despite Governor Tate Reeves's declaration that the water pressure has been restored and the water is safe to drink, activists and city officials believe the Jackson, Mississippi, water crisis still rages on.

“Extreme racist policies have hijacked our city and state and put lives in danger. Even before this crisis, the water wasn’t safe,” said Danyelle Holmes of Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition. “This is decades of neglect to allocate the resources to the city of Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, the poorest state in the country. It’s not just happening here but across the state.”

The Department of Justice says Jackson's water is not safe and is prepared to file action against Jackson under Safe Drinking Water Act.

Statement by Administrator Regan on the Ongoing Water Crisis in Jackson, Mississippi

In response to this public health crisis, National Clean Water Collective is raising funds to provide more critical supplies and relief to Jackson residents, including packaged water and water testing kits. The #CheckYourTap Water Testing Campaign is a nationwide youth-led initiative to test tap water in 50 homes and businesses for FREE. A nationally accredited lab will test for 109 possible analytes in tap water. Test results will be presented to home and business owners in a simple-to-read report.

This project aims to provide immediate assistance to Jackson residents who need water to drink, cook, and bathe, help them understand what's in their water, and empower and engage the youth to be a part of the solution to Jackson's water crisis.

Here's a breakdown of our expenses:
  • One truckload of boxed water (23 pallets of water) - roughly $13k
  • 100 Water Testing Kits - roughly $25k (Testing for up to 100 analytes, including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Operational Expenses - to execute and distribute critical relief to Jackson residents
