Emergency help for Mona Roquemore

Over the past 7 years our friend and fellow swimmer has suffered unbelievable and undiagnosable medical setbacks. She is currently in a nursing home following multiple surgeries hoping to become strong enough again to walk. Her body is wracked with infections; years of steroid prescriptions have made her body susceptible to infection, broken bones, and bleeding wounds. Doctors are reluctant to operate again as, in her last surgeries, her blood pressure dropped dangerously. Mona is moving to a nursing home that will accept her social security disability check as payment. She will need to stay there as long as it takes to be strong enough to return home, i.e. at least until she can safely walk with a walker. I am starting this fundraising campaign to rehabilitate her home so that, when she returns, she can function in her home. This will involve building ramps, removing carpet and curtains, replacing upholstered furniture, and cleaning and perhaps painting the entire interior. I will also have to pay her car note and her car insurance while her entire social security check goes toward her care in the nursing home. For years Mona has gone through medical hell but retained her sense of humor and her optimism. At this point, however, knowing that she is completely dependent on others for her care, she is really struggling. If we can let her know we care and that we will step up and provide her with a livable place to stay, it will go a long way to easing her fear and her sense of helplessness.
