The humanitarian family is grieving the immense and sudden loss of friend and colleague Sérgio L. M. Buque. As meteorologist, he had entered the humanitarian system a year ago with the aim of making better use of forecasts to prevent human suffering in the face of natural extreme events in Mozambique.
After a stroke on the morning og the 4th of June, Sérgio was admitted to the Central Hospital of Maputo (HCM) and entered a coma. After brief signs of hope for improvement of his state over the weekend, we received the unexpected and devastating news of his passing on the 6th of June.
There are no fitting words to describe the stare and grief his close-knit network finds itself in. The humanitarian community is grieving the loss of a team member and friend who inspired us all, who approached situations with resilience, humbleness and kindness - always and foremost with a focus on solidarity, the team and the greater good in mind first. It was our honor to have served next to him, to have learned and grown with him.
His sudden departure occurs just four months after Sérgio and his family suffered the abrupt loss of one of their daughters in a tragic car accident. It is difficult to grasp the pain family Buque has and is experiencing in the face of such severe loss. With Sérgio as sole earner of the household, the sudden departure of him puts family Buque in a situation of financial instability and uncertainty moving ahead. Next to this, outstanding costs related to the funeral and hospitalization add another element of financial strain on the family.
We are mobilizing the humanitarian community - and beyond - to come together in solidarity and support the family of a friend and colleague that has served tirelessly, selflessly and loyally next to many of us. Contributions of any shape and size are appreciated fully and will make the difference for family Buque in the difficult period ahead.
