About my sister:
Elnath “Elnita” Colmenares is one of the happiest, most charismatic, and loving people you could ever wish to meet. She has been key in our family and in the lives of many others. She has two children and is the head of her household in Maracaibo, Venezuela. A talented architect, she has worked tirelessly for over 20 years renovating public schools, benefiting thousands of children. She has always been a generous soul, known for her habit of opening her home to people who don’t have anywhere else to go. She is a caring daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and friend. She is always supportive in helping others achieve their goals. She is my sister, and this campaign is for her.
About her illness:
In 2014, Elnita was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). In 2015, she underwent a surgery to remove one of her kidneys. For the past six years, she has required dialysis three times per week to keep her stable while arranging for a kidney transplant. Many obstacles have prevented that transplant from taking place, most of them due to the current socio-political crisis in Venezuela. Among those are shortages of medical supplies, hospital staff, and availability of pre-surgery testing. Dialysis centers have reduced their availability as well, which has caused Elnita to start retaining liquids and toxins that have no way to leave her body. On top of all of this, in 2018 Elnita was violently assaulted in the street. She was stabbed several times and lost the function of her right eye.
In September 2019, the build-up of liquids from lack of sufficient dialysis caused Elnita’s left arm to grow disproportionately; she had lymphatic edema. In March 2020, a surgery to this arm stabilized her for a time. However, due to the same factors, she started showing respiratory issues and her arm started swelling again. In July 2020, she tested positive for Covid-19 and was hospitalized. Thankfully, she recovered, but is not completely back to normal. It’s now August 2020; this past weekend the liquids in her body caused a collapse of her lungs (Pneumothorax), and urgently requires another surgery. Her life is again in danger. We are asking for your help so she can continue her treatment and recover the stability needed to receive a kidney transplant.
What Elnita needs so she can receive her transplant:
-Stable dialysis treatment 3 times per week; this will reduce retention of liquids and toxins
-Hospitalization to drain liquids and toxins currently concentrated in her arm
-Surgery preparation: appointments and testing to prepare her for the transplant
-The transplant surgery; once she is stable the surgery can be scheduled. We have a donor in the family, so there is hope!
Why we are asking for money:
Soon after her diagnosis, Elnita was unlawfully fired from her job, leaving her without medical coverage. Since that time, I, my family, and a few friends have been using the resources that we have to cover medical expenses. However, with the escalating socio-political crisis, healthcare services are getting more expensive every day. Local currency has all but disappeared; medical providers are now charging higher rates in US dollars. This has exhausted our financial capacity and forced us to seek support from more than just family and friends. She needs help from anyone who is willing to contribute.
How we will use the money:
Donations will be used to pay for hospitalization, lab work, medical services, and surgeries, as required and prescribed by her doctors. All of your donations will help Elnita return to good health. In the event of any unused money after Elnita has recovered, all remaining funds will be donated to the National Organization of Transplants of Venezuela.
Elnita has spent many years fighting this; despite all of the suffering she still smiles and embraces life. She wants to live and keep helping as many people as she can, even while she herself is ill. We would greatly appreciate any donation you are able to provide. Ella tiene dos hijos y es la cabeza de su hogar, en Maracaibo, Venezuela. Una arquitecta talentosa, trabajó incansablemente durante más de 20 años remodelando escuelas públicas, beneficiando a miles de niños. Siempre ha sido generosa, conocida por su costumbre de abrir su casa a gente que no tiene otro lugar a donde ir. Ha sido una hija, hermana, madre, tía y amiga muy amorosa. Siempre ayuda a los demás a alcanzar sus metas. Ella es mi hermana, y esta campaña es para ella.
Sobre su enfermedad:
Elnita fue diagnosticada en 2014 con Poliquistosis Renal e Insuficiencia Renal estadio V. En 2015 uno de sus riñones fue extirpado. Por los últimos seis años ha necesitado diálisis 3 veces a la semana para mantenerla estable mientras se organiza un trasplante. Muchos obstáculos han impedido la realización del trasplante, la mayoría de ellos debido a la situación socio-política en Venezuela. Entre esos obstáculos está la escasez de insumos médicos, personal capacitado, y la disponibilidad de pruebas Pre-operatorias. Los centros de diálisis también han reducido su disponibilidad, lo que ocasionó que Elnita comenzara a retener líquidos y toxinas que no pueden ser eliminados de otra forma. Para agravar las cosas, en 2018 ella fue víctima de un violento asalto en la calle; recibió varias puñaladas y perdió la función del ojo derecho.
En septiembre de 2019, la acumulación de líquidos por falta de diálisis hizo que su brazo izquierdo creciera desproporcionadamente y presentó un edema linfático. En Marzo de 2020 fue operada y su brazo mostró mejoría. Sin embargo, debido a los mismo factores, ha presentado problemas respiratorios y su brazo comenzó a hincharse nuevamente. En Julio de 2020 dio positivo para Covid-19 y fue hospitalizada. Afortunadamente se recuperó y fue dada de alta. Llegamos a Agosto de 2020: este fin de semana sufrió un colapso del pulmón derecho por acumulación de líquido y aire (Neumotórax), y requiere urgentemente de una nueva cirugía. Su vida está en riesgo otra vez. Estamos solicitando su ayuda para continuar con los tratamientos para estabilizarla y realizar el trasplante.
Lo que Elnita necesita para poder recibir el trasplante:
-Tratamiento de diálisis estable tres veces a la semana; esto evitará la acumulación de líquidos y toxinas.
-Hospitalización para drenar los líquidos que ya están en su cuerpo
-Preparación para cirugía: consultas y exámenes para prepararla para el trasplante

Desde entonces hemos estado cuidando de su salud con nuestros propios recursos y con la ayuda de algunos amigos. Sin embargo, debido al agravamiento de la crisis socio-política en Venezuela, los servicios médicos son más caros cada día. La moneda local casi ha desaparecido y ahora los servicios médicos son cobrados en dólares americanos. Todo esto ha agotado nuestra capacidad financiera y nos ha obligado a buscar la ayuda más allá de familia y amigos. Ella necesita la ayuda de todo aquel que quiera colaborar.
Cómo usaremos los fondos:
