Hey y'all! For those who may not know me, I am Ellis Herring III, a current sophomore a Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, studying Accounting as a major. I grew up in Baton Rouge, LA on the north side of town in a neighborhood called Scotlandville. I grew up in mostly single parent household and as a family we have made and continue to make many sacrifices so that my siblings and I would have the best opportunities in life. I was blessed enough to attend and graduate from the Episcopal School of Baton Rouge. While there I was a 3 sport athlete while being captain of the football and wrestling. I earned accolades on all levels from District to Southeastern Regional in football, wrestling and track. I also held leadership positions in multiple with the main ones being the LAUNCH committee, Grill and UKnight(Cultural Diversity) clubs. I received honorable recognition as a student in Spanish, Chemistry, Dance and Theatre; and I was even lucky enough to host the talent show and be a lead in a school dance production. I volunteered as a youth wrestling coach in Baton Rouge while coaching state and regional champions. through my whole high school experience I gained tons of knowledge and wisdom because has never been easy. My mother and my family have always had financial struggles but we pride ourselves on "finding a way". When I got the oppurtunity to come to Morehouse I found more challenges to come in paying for my education. Last semester, I held over a 3.0 GPA and have gained various out-of-school knowledge from studying here in Atlanta: like modeling.I started in the football program as a complete walk-on but, with hard work, I was able to earn a scholarship. But, even with this added help the cost of my education is still a financial strain upon my family. We have come together and once again "found a way" so that my student account balance is zeroed out. It has left me without funds to buy more materials that I need for my school success and housing. The first issue is books. I have two books tha I still need to buy that total up to $200. Currently, I do not have any type of laptop device to work in my room or to use whenever I am away from campus technology sources. There are school essentials that I would like to have as well such as: a binder, more pens, a planner, etc. By using all my options to reduce my student I had to find alternative housing and take a reduced meal plan. The rest of the money within my goal is dedicated to helping me buy toiletries and supplies for my room and buy meals when I need them. The past 3 summers I have worked full-time and sometimes 55+ hours in a week to help my mom with taking care of my family and my education. I believe in myself and have invested in myself to get where I am. I still have a long ways to go and simply ask that you help my cause in any way that you can and pray for my family with the impending Hurricane Harvey situation and the recovery from the flood of 2016. If you ever catch Morehouse football cheer for #81 and if you catch me later in life ask me to help with your taxes!
