This page is to honor and support the Martin family, who just lost their precious son, Eli, at only 6 years of age after fighting leukemia.
Eli was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a very common form of childhood cancer, at 4 1/2 years old in the fall of 2017. He started chemotherapy soon after, and in February 2018 his family learned he was in remission and entered into treatment for maintenance therapy. Within weeks Eli was able to get back to being a kid again, riding his bike and scooter, playing with chalk and playing baseball with his friends.
Unfortunately in July of 2018, a routine bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture brought news that Eli had relapsed. Eli still found ways to be a kid even with his re-diagnosis, getting permission from his doctors to visit Kennywood and the Carnegie Science Center. In October 2018, Eli began a special CAR T-cell treatment at The Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. Through it all Eli’s loving personality still shone through. He loved playing with his brother Xavier; with animals, Legos, the Steelers and superheroes.
In November 2018, the Martin family learned that the treatment was unsuccessful and that Eli had 100% leukemia in his bone marrow. The doctors worked with the family to decide on the next steps in Eli’s care while they made plans for him to return home for the Christmas holiday. On January 8, 2019, Eli turned 6 years old, the day before learning that treatment would no longer be an option for Eli’s small body to handle. On January 20th 2019, Heaven gained a new angel, and Eli is now at peace for Eternity. Eli was a fireball and a true Superhero, and will be missed by his brother Xavier, his parents, grandparents, family and friends.
