Did you hear the BUZZ that elephants are afraid of bees & that this fear could actually help to conserve the African Elephant?
African Elephants can be a nuisance for local African farmers because as they migrate through the landscape in search of food and water, they will raid farmer’s crops. Scientists are now teaching farmers how to use beehive fences to keep elephants out of their crops. The beehive fences are built to surround the farmer’s land. The beehives are suspended off the ground & connected by a single wire. When the elephants come in to feed on the juicy crops they walk into the wire sending a wave of motion through the fence. This motion alerts the bees of danger and the bees get agitated. The angry bees then swarm the elephants stinging around their eyes and the very sensitive spots inside the trunk. Because elephants, like humans, do not want to experience painful stings... the elephants retreat and the bees keep them from raiding the farmer’s crop.
I will help fix this issue because I will raise money to support a beehive fence for a farmer in Africa. This will help because it will reduce conflict between the farmers and the elephants because sometimes farmers will retaliate against the elephants by killing them. Also, the honey that is harvested will add additional economic opportunity for the farmer. This contributes to conservation and preserving the world’s largest land mammal from extinction.
Together we can raise enough money to support a farmer in Africa, by contributing to an “Elephant Friendly Beehive Fence” and positively impact the lives of the farmer and the elephants
