The East Jordan Middle School “Shoe Club” has launched a fundraising campaign to enhance our elementary school garden—breaking ground on Earth Day, April 22, 2022!
Currently, the East Jordan Elementary School (EJES) has a successful gardening program that it offers to students. The program allows for a hands-on learning environment where students can be in the garden, growing plants, and learning in exciting ways. However, this program can only be offered for a portion of the school year because of Michigan's weather. As a result, the EJ Shoe Club proposes a plan to enhance the community garden to utilize the space more effectively throughout the year and improve it in other ways to make the space as valuable and efficient as possible.
The Shoe Club’s plan includes:
- Revitalizing an indoor growing space that is connected to the school.
- Installing a hoop house that will serve as a larger and more cost-efficient growing space.
- Installing two composting systems that will reduce food waste from the cafeterias in both the elementary and middle high schools.
- Improving the outdoor garden area to better serve as an outdoor classroom. The importance of vegetables and healthy eating will be incorporated into the curriculum as well.
The EJ Seed to Salad project aims to create a positive, hands-on learning environment for young students while teaching them how to grow strong plants, bodies, and minds. To cover the project's cost, the Shoe Club plans to raise $75,000 . This project will raise funds through grants, presentations to local businesses, a bowl-a-thon and GoFundMe.
Total funding needs are $75,000 dollars. Here's the breakdown:
$25,000 hoop house
$20,000 indoor growing space
$10,000 composting systems for both schools
$20,000 revitalizing the outdoor space
