ahn-nyong-hah-seh-yoh, My name is Leon Newkirk and I'm a Junior at Washington College. I want to study abroad at renowned Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea in spring semester of 2015.
I am pursuing a major in International Studies with a concentration in East Asia. As a requirement and conquest towards my major, I chose to study at one of the oldest and top private universities in South Korea. I plan to learn Korea's language and it's fascinating history in the country it all originated.
Since I declared my major in Sophomore year, I have been craving the chance to study abroad; however, my status as a low-income student landed a brick-wall right in front of my road to late nights deciphering Hangul (Korean language) and burning my tongue with spicy,Korean cuisine.
Although my mother is a first generation college graduate, in recent years she hasn't been able to work due to back/neck surgeries.She's done her best to raise a rather peculiar guy; the only person in my family to take her out to a Asian restaurant, cook korean recipes, and currently taking a course in the Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute).
My goal reaches beyond study abroad; it's to overcome the limitations of my economic status. I'm tired of thinking "don't have enough money" or "cost too much". In the past, I have lost opportunities because of this. But that won't happen anymore.Although I want to achieve something with my own hands, I may need your help.
What I need: Total of $6,500
Includes plane tickets, books, medical insurance, housing, and travel expenses
What I have done so far:
-$1,000 saved from my summer job at G.I.S lab
-$2,500 earned from International Experience Travel Award and Mentor Program
-$800 from Bennett Fund
Here is what I've done so far, only $2,500 to go. So please, let's finish the job!
