Hey everyone, I'm Iyana, an emerging photographer. I have merged my master’s degree in public health with my creative practice as a photographer to create honest storytelling that examines the impact of environmental racism, water inequities, and gentrification on Black communities and how the Black cultural identity lingers in these spaces and communities the people are erased from.
Your donation will support my research and development for my ongoing photography project I’m Still Here domestically and abroad. All of my projects have been self-funded for almost two years, and while COVID-19 has not hindered the creation of my work, it has created more barriers for me to continue self-funding it, so I am asking for your assistance to help to continue creating, researching, and conducting this important project with gear.
Recently my laptop crashed during my final stages of finishing a Fulbright scholarship application, and while developing other critical creative opportunities — the next stage of my project is crucial and dependent on me being outfitted with the necessary equipment— I have been functioning with a loaner which is due for a return soon.
A computer is the second most valuable tool of my practice: for editing, research, and grant application. The number one most important tool is the camera. I have learned from my laptop’s crash that I would be nowhere without my camera — it is crucial that I have a backup for this purpose.
