As many of our community members know, Tom Conley Park has been a venue for kids with big dreams for more than 50 years. Every spring, summer and fall, night after night, families gather here to watch baseball, football and cheerleading. Over the years, tens of thousands of players have developed a passion for sports on these fields. Countless children have learned imperative life lessons in sportsmanship, competitiveness, teamwork, resilience, courage and hard work. Through youth sports, players are encouraged to achieve both athletic and academic success in a fun, positive learning environment. For many former players and coaches, nights at Tom Conley ball field have helped shape them into the adults they are today.

What many people may not know, is that the parcel of land that has had an immeasurable impact on our youth, was leased to our longtime (former) Commissioner, Clyde King. Mr. King spent nearly 50 years as the dedicated and hardworking Commissioner at Tom Conley Park. He was devoted and tireless in his efforts to provide an atmosphere where the Ladson community could create memories and enjoy year-round athletics. His retirement in December 2017 marked the ending of an era, and unfortunately it also signified the end of our lease.

Fortunately, our newly appointed Commissioner, Cheri Greene, shares the same tenacity and love of sports that many of our children have developed at Tom Conley park. Her husband, Brian, has coached here for over a decade and 2 of her 3 children have spent much of their childhood playing sports for Ladson Youth Organization. Cheri’s passion for empowering our youth led her to accept this volunteer position and develop a team of board members, tasked with the responsibility to improve and enhance Ladson Youth Organization. Collectively, we know that youth sports are more than just a fun way to get outdoors and stay fit. Beyond the love of a game, children also learn perseverance, self-confidence, humility and dignity that will follow them their entire lives.

The owner of Tom Conley Park has been exceedingly generous by permitting the use of the youth fields for the past several decades, but with the dawning of a new era comes change. He is involved with another local charitable organization that would benefit considerably from the proceeds of the sale of Tom Conley Park. There has been mention of selling the property to developers in the area, to expand the ever-growing neighborhood directly behind our beloved park. In recognition of the importance of youth sports, the owner has graciously offered Ladson Youth Organization the once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase Tom Conley Park for a fraction of its value.

It is our mission to keep Tom Conley Park where it belongs, in the hands of our youth. If the future of the park is left in the hands of developers, the majority our players will be forced to travel to neighboring towns to enroll. It is our fear that countless children will lose the opportunity to experience the glory and thrill of youth sports.

With your help, we hope to acquire enough funds to purchase Tom Conley Park and further develop the athletic program this community has enjoyed for half of a century. No donation amount is too small, as with football, every inch of progress brings you closer to the goal!
