Devon's Medical Fund

Devon is a 14-year-old who loves to play hockey. He got his first pair of ice skates when he was 3. He’s always been active his entire life. So, it was a shock when we found out that he had Type 1 Diabetes.

On January 9th Devon’s brothers came home from school to find Devon laying on the floor and almost unresponsive. They called us asking what they should do. (We were out of town celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We immediately had the boys call 911 and then rushed home to be by his side.) The paramedics quickly showed up and determined that they needed to rush Devon to Primary Children's Hospital. He was admitted into the Emergency Room. There they diagnosed him with Type 1 Diabetes. His blood sugar levels were so high that the machine couldn’t determine what he was at. The meter only reads up to 700. He was well over that. While being treated in the ER he was struggling to breathe. They transferred him to the ICU. He stayed there for two days. When he was released to a normal hospital room he still wasn’t himself. It wasn’t until day three that his personality started coming back. What a relief that was! While at the hospital Devon learned how to count carbs, check his blood, as well as give himself daily shots. He was very brave. He has a hard road ahead of him.

Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that Devon will have to fight daily for the rest of his life. There will be multiple finger pricks along with daily shots. Going forward Devon will have to give himself a shot every time he eats. Which is a lot for a growing teenage boy. He will have to check his blood multiple times a day to make sure that he regulates his blood glucose levels. This isn’t a disease that Devon caused on his own. He didn’t eat bad foods or gain a ton of weight (That is Type 2) Unfortunately, doctors can’t tell us how Devon got this disease. Currently, there isn’t a cure. We pray that one day there will be.

We’ve created this GoFundMe page to help with all the medical expenses. Medical insurance will only cover a portion of these fees. With the ambulance ride, the ER visit, staying in ICU, the hospital stay, along with all the supplies we will need to pay to keep him alive, there are going to be HUGE bills to pay out of pocket.

His doctor has also suggested getting a Continuous Glucose Monitor along with a pump. The pump alone can cost up to $10,000.

Our goal is to keep Devon active with hockey and make his life as “Normal” as we possibly can.

We’re asking for financial support to help with these new expenses. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all!
