The goal of this gofundme is to raise money for an educational jazz radio station in the San Diego area. My aim is to expose jazz to the City Heights community I grew up in. Jazz is a unique cultural expression rooted in the African American experience. It is high art that requires education, patience, improvisation, and dedication. Jazz is the oral history of Africa in America, it is the pride and the protest. It is movement and adaptation. It is power and reaction. And it is all too often lost on the youth. My goal is to expose the youth to their history and help them to know themselves, who they are and who they can be, where they're expression comes from, and where it is going. There is a philosophy behind it. The originators had a tenacity in their approach I think is important for young people to study and appreciate. This music has been one of the most positive forces in my life and I hope to project that positivity on to tomorrow.
But it takes money.
Money for equipment, licensing, and royalty fees.
Money to spread the word and compensate guest musicians and speakers, teachers, and artists.
But when given the historical background of this music, the context with which it has shaped black music as a whole, the struggles and perseverance the artist exhibited to bring this music to the people, I believe it can raise the consciousness and awareness to those willing to listen. I believe that with a fortified experience of the past, we can shape a better tomorrow.
I believe in this platform and it's potency to lift a community to the place we need to be.
I'll be collaborating with local musicians and artists and inviting them to share their stories and grow our community together.
