Educate Bwindi with Critical Thinking

Tax deductible

THE CRITICAL THINKING PROJECT

In a remote village in rural Uganda, where children and their families are barely able to feed and clothe themselves, a local school was purchased by a small, all-volunteer US 501c3 named Educate Bwindi.  Their dream was to make these children’s lives better.

The exam driven Ugandan educational system requires rote memorization without teaching foundations, background information or logical reasoning.  Children “learn” through hours of drilling, spending long days repeating what the teacher says, over, and over, and over.

Educate Bwindi’s Board knows the students need Critical Thinking, but lacks the expertise, time and money to make it a reality.  Then a volunteer team of US educators raised their hands. The Critical Thinking Team was born.

Here’s the problem: transportation, lodging, and supplies are expensive.  The classrooms are empty. No learning toys, story books, crayons, mathematical manipulatives. Not even a cabinet to store supplies if we did have them. We will stuff our own suitcases, but frankly it won’t be enough. We need cash to fund the Project.

One Team member spent last June introducing ideas to the teaching staff, who were doubtful at first, but then became excited and hungry for more. This year, Team members will model and work with staff to find ways to weave critical thinking methods into the required curriculum.

We plan to develop an environment that gives children the opportunity to imagine, create and problem solve. Our children range from 3 years through 7th grade.  We need to replace rows of hard benches with tables and chairs that can be moved around for collaboration, ideation, reading and thinking while the teachers and the Team inspire joy, curiosity and empowerment.  Every child should have a real chance of making a future in a country where few rural children ever have a chance at all.
