Edstrong Therapy Equipment Fund

My name is Edwin Munoz. On September 22nd of 2018 I dove into the lake, broke my cervical spine (C5-C7) and suffered a spinal cord injury. As an uninsured patient I was blessed with donations to help with the financial burden that comes with this new life. I am on a mission to start a non profit and raise money in order to secure therapy equipment. I eventually plan on opening up my own facility where I and other spinal cord injuries can work towards our dream to one day walk again. It scares me just as much as it excites me to announce this new venture but I don’t doubt for one second I can help many going through what I went through. With a masters degree in exercise physiology I am confident in my knowledge of exercise prescription as well as my experience in rehab to know what I need to do in order to continue to see progress. Walking or not, therapy and exercise is a must for continued progress in a spinal cord injury’s life. I accept the challenge and plan on encouraging others to continue the fight.

My therapy has been taking place at the Neurological Recovery Center (NRC) in Fort Worth and the Adaptive Training Foundation (ATF) in Carrollton. NRC will no longer be treating spinal cord injuries (SCIs) leaving the majority of their focus on Trumatic brain injuries. This amazing facility has changed my life in the time that they treated me and will continue to do so for others as they shift their focus. I will continue to go to ATF two days a week. I have built trust within my community of peers and helped a few quad friends with workouts. Let me make this clear, I will not be giving therapy I will be helping others strengthen muscles to improve quality of life. My goal is to raise as close to $30,000 in order to make this possible. Every dollar gained from this will be used for this venture. The equipment that I plan to get is limited in my area and in the thousands when it comes to purchasing. Lack of insurance and funding limits many from equipment necessary for neuro recovery. The average cash price for a therapy session is about $200. $30,000 will run out in under 1 year if used for one person’s therapy. logically thinking to me, is to take that money and provide a facility and equipment for multiple SCIs in need inevitably killing two birds with one stone. My goal is not to make this a business nor do I plan on making money. Donations will allow others including myself to have access to equipment that insurance so often refuses to pay for. Unfortunately my heart for helping others in this situation does not match my bank account and I need help. I’ve prayed about it and been as patient as I can but time is of the essence when it comes to spinal cord injuries. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make this possible. The average expenses for a first year spinal cord injury is $800,000. For me it was over $2 million. Others are not as fortunate as I am to get the assistance and support that I did. I have been beyond blessed with the support of many throughout my journey and I no longer take anything for granted in life. I have learned firsthand that nothing in this world is impossible with a little faith. Before my accident I struggled with purpose. I knew I wanted to help people but I didn’t know how. I do not doubt for one second that this is what I was put on this earth to do. I will continue to fight my battle while encouraging others to push through their’s. I will lead by example and show everyone how to take life’s punches with an iron chin. I continue to pray for the strength to endure this beautiful struggle we all call life. Thanks again to everyone for the continued support I never forget how blessed I am!
