-My aunt Missy phoned me from Rhode Island Hospital to inform me her husband Eddie, had went to his primary care doctor earlier in the day about the severe level of pain in the right side of his neck. This pain thad been bothering him for weeks and was increasing as the days passed. Not wanting to worry my aunt or take time from work, He hid from everyone but his doctor, his recent vision loss, and inability to extend his right arm.
Luckily Eddie's Doctor had a less passive approach and immediately became concerned by his own observations and Eddies elevated blood pressure. He ordered an immediate MRI, and discovered the rare medical condition, Vertebral arterial dissection.
Vertebral arterial dissection is usually the result of trauma to the head or neck, causing a flap like tear in the artery. The inner lining of Ed's artery was so torn, blood entered the arterial wall and formed a blood clot due to thickening this artery, Eddie had been having suffering undocumented ischemic strokes or TIAs for weeks After further medical imagery and blood work, they leaned that there was also a hole in a valve of Ed's heart.
Now back at home, I wish I was able to say that Ed is doing well and expected to make a full recovery. But the truth is he can barely self ambulate with a cane, he has short term memory loss, and other cognitive delays. Although, Ed set up insurance through Aflac in case he was injured while on the job as a diesel mechanic. Unfortunately his claim has been denied, and his employers medical insurance company is requiring him to pay out of pocket for coverage as a stipulation with TDI.
The out of pocket expense for his prescriptions, copays for more neurological testing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiologist are staggering.
With only one car, they have to coordinate ways to get him to Providence to see his weekly specialists while still awaiting his first temporary disability check, my aunt has to take on even more shifts at work, And is forced with no other choice but to leave Ed home on his own during the week, for 16 hours while she is sick with worry waiting for that dreaded call that his blood pressure has again became too elevated, or that he fell from his imbalance just by walking to the bathroom.
But despite it all they both still manage to force a smile and stay positive for their two children. We are all afraid this tremendous amount of stress will inevitability be the root cause of another stroke. It will remain unclear until at least October, if and when he will be able to return to work due to concerns of not only another tear, but possibly a connective tissue disorder.
As you can imagine the household expenses are now starting to pile up because of this devastating medical emergency, so I decided to make this page for Ed and his family. In hopes to restore hope when it is needed the most.
