On March 11, 2017 Tyler Armstrong had a near drowning accident and suffered cardiac arrest resulting in an anoxic brain injury. Tyler’s life was dramatically altered that day as was his family’s.
Instead of focusing on computer science at Michigan State University, Tyler is learning how to sleep through the night again, walk independently, perform simple self care tasks, manage his abnormal muscle tone and learn verbal communication skills. Our family members have taken on new roles as caregivers, medical researchers and support systems.
The past year has been consumed with rehabilitation, consults and therapy with Neurologist, Physiatrist, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Internal medicine, Infectious disease, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Psychiatry, along with, alternative medicine including Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, cranial sacral therapy, GyroStim therapy and holistic health. We have traveled for second opinions to Mayo Clinic, New Orleans, Colorado, Chicago and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Treatments and therapies will be ongoing at this time.
Recovery, we have been told, takes place in small increments over time. We have learned that brain injuries don’t discriminate. We have found strength and support in others families in similar situations. Dr’s that think out of the box give us hope for continued improvement.
Tyler is our Olympian. We are so proud of the progress Tyler has made thus far. His family and friends remain his biggest cheerleaders.
