Earthquake relief for Juchitán

Many homes have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. The main regional hospital collapsed. Municipal offices, schools, churches and cultural centers are damaged or destroyed. Intense and frequent aftershocks – 1,323 to date – put more structures at risk every day.
We seek to support the work of two committed Juchitán residents to set up community kitchens.
The writer, historian and cultural expert Víctor Cata and the journalist Roselia Chaca are setting up 4 community kitchens in three Juchitán neighborhoods: the 5ta sección, the 8va sección and the 9na sección. These are low income neighborhoods that were especially hard hit by the earthquake and are underassisted at this time of crisisu.
Funds collected will be turned over directly to Víctor and Roselia to purchase food supplies for the 4 community kitchens. Gabriela plans to make weekly wires to Víctor via Western Union starting the week of September 18 and for as long as the funds last. Wire receipts will be saved, scanned and presented to donors as part of a report once the relief efforts come to completion.
This is a rapid ONE WEEK fundraising effort as the kitchens will begin operation by Saturday September 16, 2017.
About the fundraiser:
Gabriela Pérez Báez is a linguist who has carried out research on Zapotec languages and carried out language revitalization projects since 2002. She has published extensively and is currently compiling a dictionary of Isthmus Zapotec, the endangered language spoken in Juchitán.
Gabriela's relationship to the people of Juchitán runs deep. 21 speakers of Isthmus Zapotec from Juchitán and neighboring towns have worked with her to contribute to the dictionary. All have been severely affected by the earthquake. The homes of three of them INCLUDING VICTOR CATA are no longer inhabitable.
She has provided to date US$400 to begin the operation of the kitchens and has donated 10 water filtration systems worth about US$400 as well to provide the kitchens with no cost, reliable potable water.
Víctor Cata has been a collaborator of Gabriela since 2012 when they worked on a group research project to describe the verbal systems of 11 Zapotec languages. Since then they have collaborated on numerous projects:
• a case study for the Smithsonian's Folklife Festival (2013) which Roselia Chaca covered in her capacity as journalist
• production of education materials derived from a lexico-botanical research project (2014, https://neho.si.edu/about-la-ventosa-collection)
• a co-authored, peer-reviewed publication on Diidxazá (https://revistas-filologicas.unam.mx/tlalocan/index.php/tl/article/view/241)
• and research on a variety of topics for the Diidxazá (Isthmus Zapotec) dictionary (since 2015 and as recently of Friday after the earthquake...)
