Final Month of College: Jamaica

Dear Family and Friends:
We are writing to you about Makada McBean, the daughter of Hopeton “Balla” McBean, the Rastaman who came to our wedding in Jamaica. Balla also cooked for us when we stayed at the guest house in Kingston. Sadly, a few years ago Balla was murdered by an assailant who wanted his goats. Harcourt and I have helped Makada after the loss of her father and have encouraged her with her goal of becoming a teacher. Makada has been advancing well with her studies at Shortwood Teachers College in Jamaica, but is unable to return to school for her final year, because she cannot afford the tuition. She is behind in payment for last year’s tuition (US$1,800) and this year’s tuition is US$3,000. If she is able to raise the funds, she will be able to stay in school and graduate next May.
We are kindly asking if you can make a contribution to Makada’s tuition so that she can readmit to college as soon as possible. Makada has made such progress in the last three years and it would be a shame if she came this far and did not finish college. Any amount that you can afford to contribute would be greatly appreciated. She hopes to become a high school English or Theater Arts teacher in Jamaica, and also later go to grad school.
