COVID FREE Outdoor Garden and School Learning Lab
I am a Life Scout who has just completed my Eagle Project, a raised bed garden, for the 5th Grade Class at my little brother's Catholic elementary school. They have been in school in class with the same cohort since August. Covid Protocol=No visitors. No sports. No special events. Basically, no fun.
Initially, I set out to refurbish the school's gym locker rooms, but due to Covid 19 restrictions, I was unable to enter the school. I had to come up with a new plan, outdoors. My plan was to convert a courtyard of crabgrass and change it into a 4 raised bed garden completely made out of cedar so it would last for years. I also included a compost bin, plexiglass greenhouse for seedlings, side plantings that would attract beneficial insects like butterflies and bees, surround it with a wire fence and secured it with a cedar gate. I wanted to expand the students' learning experiences with these additions. As my design took shape it mushroomed into an outdoor learning lab for the entire school. Now, students from every grade have an opportunity to learn in new ways, outside, Covid FREE and have some fun playing in the dirt. The Nature electives and recycling club (The Green Team) now have a space to call home. And the teachers will have something beautiful to look at come spring. It is my hope that this outdoor space plants seeds for bountiful fall harvests that are donated to the local food pantry and low income sister schools that the school supports.
I need $877.62 to pay for all the cedar boards and materials we used to build these raised beds and garden. Would you help me finish my Eagle Project by donating? Any amount would be greatly appreciated.
