Gerri Louise has hosted, emceed, and participated in just about any type of charity event there is. Always donating her time to a multitude of causes, events, and fundraisers. Whether she was doing a comedy routine, cooking food, or auctioneering, she gave her time and energy to try and surpass the financial goals set.
Now, Gerri Louise needs your help. Gerri has struggled with diverticulitis most of her life. 10 days ago, while on vacation visiting family and close friends in Nova Scotia her colon ruptured. Rushed to the hospital, she had emergency surgery and has been in the ICU ever since.
One of the gravest dangers of this is sepsis, the fluids in the colon and intestines are extremely harmful to the body and the state of septic shock is a life threatening one. Gerri fought through this while in a medically induced coma for over a week. This was a touch and go situation, but her fighting spirit pushed through and we are SO THRILLED to report she is no longer in septic shock.
Each day she makes small strides (which is nothing short of a miracle in the ICU). She will most likely remain in the care of the incredible ICU doctors and nurses for another week to build her strength.
There is potential for another surgery in order to fully remove her large intestine which doesn't seem to be getting enough oxygen, we hope to know the verdict soon.
Having been on full or partial life support since her first surgery, she was extubated yesterday and is now breathing on her own and slowly getting her voice back.
Gerri Louise is a firecracker, a burst of light, and it is still very difficult to see her in such a state. The support, prayers, good vibes and thoughts have truly kept us all going through this tough time.
Although she is on the healing track, the financial stress that is about to be placed on Gerri and her loving husband Don will be very difficult. Our goal is to make this healing process as stress free as possible.
At this time we are not sure how much their American insurance policy will cover while receiving long term treatment in Canada. We can only imagine how gruesome these costs will be, but that is sadly just the beginning. She will need physical therapy in order to stabilize enough to travel back home to Key West, and we are anticipating having to cover transport costs as well.
Due to Gerri's long recovery time, we are also not sure if or when she will be capable to go back work. She and Don depend on her salary as Don is retired and unable to work during this time due to his own poor health.
Don is also on the list for a kidney transplant and they both may need full time support at home until they are both strong enough to get back into their routine. We wish we had a timeline to provide, but in this scenario there simply isn't one.
All donations will go directly to Don and Gerri to ease their transition back to good health. We are so grateful to our incredible friends and family for supporting us through this terrifying ordeal and we thank you in advance for any financial support you may graciously donate.
