Help Hyrum Mace with his DIPG Brain Cancer Care

This time last month, Hyrum was a perfectly healthy five-year-old boy. Then the unimaginable happened. Hyrum started vomiting and experiencing rapid vision changes. His parents took him for a pediatric vision photo test on April 4, and were referred to a CT scan. That scan revealed a tumor on his brain stem. The pediatrician cried when she told them.

 

They rushed to the pediatric ER, and Hyrum got an MRI. The results of that MRI were very conclusive and devastating. This type of tumor is very aggressive, and the doctor simply told his parents, “We have not had much success treating this kind of tumor.” Hyrum's brain cancer is a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). There is no known treatment that can cure it. With radiation and a clinical trial, his family may have another 9 months with him. Anything more is a miracle.

 

Hyrum's treatment plan right now is 6 weeks of radiation (every week day for 1-2 hours), then 4 weeks of rest, then some kind of clinical trial. A clinical trial would be location specific - possibly involving a temporary move for the family (Hyrum, his mom and dad, and his two younger siblings).

 

Let us state the obvious: Hyrum's family is dealing with a tremendous amount. And, because this was so sudden and severe, no financial plan would be adequate to cover the costs. His care will be expensive, and helping with this cost, we believe, is a great service opportunity.

 

Hyrum and his family are full of faith and service -- constantly helping neighbors, family members, and friends. And we mean this truly. You've never met a couple more committed to bettering their communities. Let's all join together for them now -- help them as they have helped so many.
