Ericka's story:
On Thursday, August 16th, Ericka was scheduled for what was thought to be a routine lymph node biopsy to rule out everything about a few enlarged lymph nodes on her neck/clavicle that were being watched. The call that came from the surgeon that same afternoon was a call that no parent expects, "Ericka's biopsy came back positive for lymphoma. You've been scheduled to meet with an oncologist tomorrow morning." So the journey begins....
The last month has been a whirlwind! Ericka has been diagnosed with stage 3a Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She has had 3 surgical procedures, numerous scans and tests. Chemo started on Tuesday, September 4th. She is scheduled for 4 cycles of 3 weeks each of chemo; 8 days on and 13 days off, with reassessment after the first two cycles. She has been strong and stoic each step of the way! Ericka completed Cycle 1 of chemo on 9/11. She then was admitted to the hospital for 5 days when she spiked a fever. She is now back home awaiting Cycle 2 that is scheduled for 9/25.
Ericka will continue to participate in her sophomore year at Xavier College Prep and gymnastics at Impact Gymnastics Academy as best as she can throughout treatment. Years of gymnastics have certainly prepared her to be tenacious and will serve her well during this journey.
Ericka's faith and positive attitude, her medical team, family, friends and the community of support around her is key to her beating this cancer!
