Hello everyone! My name is Penny Cochran, I’m a 22 year-old trans woman living in Pennsylvania. I’m a graphic designer for the Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coalition and local trans* advocate, as well as an adjunct professor at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.
I began my medical transition 4 years ago, and have since updated my legal name and gender marker on my documentation. I’m raising money for Gender Affirmation Surgery, a procedure I find myself unable to put off any longer for the sake of my mental health and well-being. My surgery is scheduled for April 8th.
This surgery would radically improve my quality of life. By reducing my genital dysphoria it will enable me to go swimming and wear a bathing suit, wear tight bottom clothing such as leggings and skirts, and result in improved sex and intimacy. It will also reduce the costs of medication and clothing, as I will have no need to buy testosterone blocking medication or women’s intimate wear with space for a penis, which is considered “specialty” and tends to be more expensive.
While vaginoplasty is covered by my insurance, my surgeon Dr. Christine Mcginn is considered out of network. As vaginoplasty is a specialty surgery whose functional and aesthetic success is critically important to my health and well-being, it is dangerous for me to go to an in-network surgeon who is not as experienced with this surgical method as Dr. McGinn.
Additionally, Dr. McGinn does not bill to insurance directly. This means that I must file for a reimbursement from my insurance after paying the surgeon’s full price, and it is unclear how much of the cost insurance will cover.
Your donation will contribute to McGinn’s surgical cost, as well as the cost of critical post-operative healing supplies that are not covered by insurance. These supplies include pads, a vaginal dilator set, medical lube, OTC painkillers, and cheap panties and linens to bleed all over. It will also cover living costs while I recover, as I will be unable to work while I heal. Every donation helps!
The less time I spend worrying about financial burden, the more time I can spend focusing on a smooth and healthy recovery.
