Dustin’s Cancer Surgery

Donation protected
Our friend, family member, and co-worker Dustin Lawrenson is going through a difficult medical stretch. In October 2016, he was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer at the age of 32. Dustin had a Radical Inguinal Orchiectomy (they removed his right testicle) followed by one round of Carboplatin Chemotherapy in November 2016. He was out of work for 11 weeks due to treatment and recovery, which included hospitalization. Since then, Dustin has been under the surveillance of his doctors and has been subject to numerous scans.

On October 4, 2017, a routine scan showed the possible return of cancer to the lymph nodes in his abdomen (between the aorta and vena cava). Dustin received this news one week away from hitting the year mark of his initial diagnosis. Unfortunately, two additional tests confirmed that his Cancer has returned/spread and that he would once again need to fight.

After consulting with the world’s leading doctor and pioneer in the development of the life-saving medical treatment for Testicular Cancer, Dr. Lawrence Einhorn, Dustin has decided to fly to the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center for the Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection (RPLND) surgical procedure. He will be under the care of Dr. Einhorn and an expert urological surgical staff. The surgery, a very intrusive operation, will require an incision from his sternum to his pelvis. This is very complex procedure and carries significant risks and possible complications. Dustin is expecting to spend anywhere from 4-6 days in the hospital with 1-2 days in a local hotel recovering before flying back home. Once home, Dustin will need several weeks to recover.

The financial costs of treatment are proving to be overwhelming for the Lawrenson family. The trip to Indiana alone will be as much as $4,000. That will cover flights, hotel, hospital and doctor bills. Dustin and his family are still paying for medical bills from his battle with cancer last year, with more expected to come. The goal of $5,000 is intended to cover this trip, and provide breathing room for future planned and unplanned expenses as they relate to his cancer fight.

Dustin is a Correctional Officer at United States Penitentiary Atwater, where he has been employed the past 4 years. On October 6, 2017 he sustained a knee injury at work and is currently waiting Workman’s Comp approval for surgery. Prior to Atwater, he worked in the Oregon and Idaho Departments of Corrections. Misty is a Master’s student at Fresno State, and is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2018. They have been married for 11 years and together they have three children (Brooklyn 9, Lillian 7 and Thaddeus 5).

On November 17, 2017, Dustin’s mom passed away after battling AL Amyloidosis for nearly two years.

This past year has proven to be one full of challenges, tragedies, and emotional and physical stress for Dustin and the rest of his family. Your support for the Lawrenson family will be deeply felt and greatly appreciated.
