Durham's 1st Cultural Performing Arts School

Donation protected
Afiwi Groove School is an award-winning performing arts program whose mission is to inspire, empower, and educate through African arts and culture.

Established in 2013, this not-for-profit organization based in the Durham Region continues to thrive through the many barriers often experienced by Black organizations committed to creating safe and empowering spaces for the community.

The road to finding a space to call our home has not been easy; our drive and commitment to empowering Black youth, children and their families have remained at the forefront, particularly over the last two years.

Like many not-for-profit organizations, the pandemic has presented many challenges, including a lack of supportive and available space to deliver the programs and services that we know to support the health and well-being of our Afiwi Groove School students and community.

Afiwi Groove School has recently found space in the Durham Region to call "home." While we are excited to embark on this new chapter, we need your support to assist with the renovation and construction costs to create a space that lets everyone who enters the space know that this is also their home. The drive that has fueled us for the last two years is even more ignited as we hope to rebuild and open new doors to the Afiwi Groove Cultural and Performing Arts Centre in Pickering, ON.

To make this dream a reality, we humbly as for your support.

Funds raised will be used to purchase materials for our building renovations, such as cultural instruments, dance mirrors, performance flooring, paint, furniture, office supplies, sound systems, and signage.

Please do what you can to help Afiwi Groove School develop our Cultural Performing Arts Centre and service the youth who need access to dancing, drumming, and other culturally-based programming.

To help you understand the impact of African dancing and drumming, please see the following testimonials from current parents:

“Thank you for running a great program this year despite the COVID hiccups along the way. Maya was so sad to leave her class for the summer :) we are looking forward to the new groove in the fall”. Stephanie

"Thanks so much for bringing the energy for our kiddos each week! Big love to Miss Alivia from us too. We'd be happy to participate online in summer months... also loved the storytimes and hope to try some workshops in future too. These are some heavy times and Afiwi is bringing our kiddos so much opportunity for joy and connection. Thank you Afiwi team!" Gillian

“This was our first year with Afiwi groove and it won’t be the last. Your passion and commitment is evident. It’s much more than a school. Thank you for all you do for the students and to spread your love for the culture." Monique
