Duane Barrett Brain Cancer Fund

On Friday, July 24th, Duane Barrett was taken to Albany General Hospital after family members noticed him struggling through some atypical confusing moments.  The original diagnosis was a bleeding cyst on the brain.  Following a transfer to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, surgery was performed on July 27th.  Following pathology on what was thought to be a benign cyst, doctors delivered a staggering diagnosis:  Glioblastoma, which is considered the deadliest human cancer.

Following three non-responsive days, and a confirmed pathology report, a second brain surgery was performed on Friday, July 31st.  Recovery has been slow, and because of COVID, only his wife, Marie, has been able to be by his side throughout.  Next February they will celebrate their 60th anniversary.  The road ahead is obviously uncertain, and following multiple surgeries, a long hospital stay, transitional care, home health and God willing, a long rehab, bills will pile up quickly.  

Coach Barrett touched so many lives in his many years as a beloved teacher and basketball coach, and rarely asks anyone for anything.  It just isn’t his way.  But, so many have already asked how they can help, and show their love.  It is with a thankful spirit of gratitude that his friends and family have set up this page, because we’ll need so much help in battling this awful cancer.  We are aware that so many times a fight, like one his family is facing, can have crippling financial effects on a spouse, and extended family who already have so much to worry about.
