DrumConnection Flood Recovery Fund

Dear drummers, dancers, friends, and fans of West African music and culture,

Drum Connection, New England's premier school of African drumming, was hit by three flash floods in its main building this August and September.  The main drum room - where we have had so many classes, workshops, and individual lessons for folks from 2 to 92, suffered extensive damage each time.

Walls, carpeting, instruments -- so much has been lost with each successive flood, sometimes lost again after having been repaired.   One flood would have been bad enough.  Three floods within two months is just...mind-boggling and hideously expensive.

As you probably can guess, insurance won't cover it, and as I know you know, working musicians don't usually have a lot of savings.   Alan Tauber, the founder, director, heart, and soul of TDC, is tapped out -- the cost of repairs now well exceeds his income and savings.

To rebuild the Drum Room at TDC, we need money for so many things:  carpets and padding, drywall, painting, plumbing, electrical, repairing damaged drums and other instruments, replacing lost inventory, and paying teachers to keep classes going.

We all benefit from the restoration of this amazing space.   DrumConnection is a place where thousands have come to learn West African music, experience drum circles, and study with masters and legends of African drumming.   Here you can find a vertible museum of Guinean artifacts unavailable anywhere else, and connections to Guinean culture that are among the strongest in the U.S. Drummers all over the world buy, trade, and repair instruments through TDC.   For students like me, it's a place not only to drum, but also to learn, share, listen, laugh, work, relax, and just be in this treasure of a place.

Repairs are already underway again to make the space habitable and safe , so we need money now.   We need to pay the rent, the utilities, the painters, the plumbers and the carpet installers.

I have been studying with Alan for 14 years.   He is a fighter and a survivor, and he puts the needs of others before his own, believing that kindness is repaid in time.  I'm pretty sure that all of you know this about him, too.  We can't lose TDC, and we can't lose Alan.

Please donate to the TDC Flood Recovery.
