Driving Instructor Hit By Drunk Driver
On August 13, 2020, tragedy struck our family in a way we never could have expected. Susan Schwaner—our beloved mother, daughter, teacher, and most recently grandmother (GiGi)—was involved in a horrific car accident where she was hit head-on by a drunk driver.
At the time of the accident, Susan, who works as a driving instructor for Coach’s Academy in Slidell, was finishing up her last lesson of the day. As Susan and her student driver entered the roundabout for the final portion of their lesson, a driver in a black Jeep came speeding towards them, traveling in excess of 50 mph. The Jeep slammed into the front of the vehicle in which Susan was riding, crushing its front end completely and causing the car to catch fire. Thankfully, a few good Samaritans rushed to their aid and were able to pull Susan and her student out of the car. Both Susan and the student sustained serious and debilitating injuries as a result of the crash and were immediately flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans where they are currently receiving treatment.
Susan and her student driver are lucky to have survived the crash, but we know the road to recovery will be a long one. For Susan, the time it will take to recover from this accident extends far beyond the broken femur, pelvis, ribs, and wrist she sustained in the accident. Luckily, Susan is a fighter, as many of you reading this know.
For those of you that do not know Susan or that do not know her well—Susan is a caring, devoted mother of three and grandmother of two. She has devoted her life to teaching and tutoring her students, and she is looking forward to the time when she can do so again in the future.
