Drew Orton Emergency Surgery for Guts

Donation protected
On Sunday, 9/15 Drew Orton was involved in a BMX accident while in Richmond.

He came down HARD on his handlebars, which ripped through his abdomen and intestines and caused him to lose a liter of blood. He went into emergency surgery last night, where they removed a 60 centimeter section of his lower intestine and patched his colon and abdomen back together.  His buddy Derek was able to get him into the hospital quickly, which allowed him to get medical attention before his bowel shut down. He's going to be okay, but it's a 6-8 week recovery time with a decent chance that he will have to deal with a hernia for the rest of his life.

We'll be in the hospital for the next 48 hours at least for observation, to make sure his guts are working properly and are able to digest without issue.

Those who really know Drew know that everything he does is extremely physical. He will be unable to perform most duties all of his jobs, and this will greatly affect his income for the next 4-6 weeks (if not the rest of his life). In addition to this, Drew had just cancelled his health insurance as he was taken off salary at one of his jobs.

It's going to be a difficult road to recovery, and we are thankful for any help we may receive. We will be applying for financial assistance to help with medical bills, but still have to figure out how to cover living expenses while Drew is out of commission. I don't even know what to ask for, but we are grateful for any assistance whether that be positive encouragement and support, visits, or monetary donations. This is a start I guess.

He's currently at the VCU medical center, Main 9 Central room 224-B. It's a little too soon for visitors outside of family, but if anyone was interested in sending a singing telegram I'm sure it'd help make him feel better.

Thank you guys,
