In Memory of Dr. Ilya Zaliapin

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Ilya Zaliapin, a beloved member of the University of Nevada, Reno community. Dr. Zaliapin was a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who dedicated over 16 years of his life to the University. He was a renowned scholar with a distinguished research career in applied probability and statistics. His research interests focused on random self-similar trees and networks, coalescent and branching processes, random sums of heavy-tailed variables, and time series analysis. He made significant contributions to the fields of statistical seismology, river channel networks, and cell biology.

Before joining the University of Nevada, Reno, he was a PostDoc/Assistant Researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he researched mathematical modeling and statistical analysis. He received his Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1999 and his MS in Probability and Statistics from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1995.

Dr. Zaliapin is survived by his wife, Elena, and two young sons. We understand that this is a difficult time for his family, and we want to offer our support in any way we can.
