In Memory of Gil Ben-Shlomo

Donation protected
On October 21, Gil passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50. He leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Anna, his two beautiful daughters Noam (age 14) and Roni (age 18), his father Haim and mother Esther, his extended family and two Boxer dogs (Lily and Shoshi).

Gil was a doting father, devoted husband, loving brother and son, and a dear friend to many. His bright smile, keen intellect, hearty laugh, and charisma would light up a room.

Gil Ben-Shlomo (DACVO 2012) earned his DVM and a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Ophthalmology from Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He completed his comparative veterinary ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida (2007-2010) and joined the faculty at Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor in 2010, progressing to Associate Professor with tenure in 2016. As a teacher he served as a role model to students and residents through his professional conduct and ethical standards.  His passion for veterinary ophthalmology fueled his approach and success in teaching the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary ophthalmologists. His research was both innovative as well as providing a bridge from the bench top to the patient, and has had a significant impact in both the veterinary and human realm in retinal neurodegenerative diseases. In the clinic, Gil was always known for the generous number of treats he would give patients (even diabetics!), his warm and welcoming demeanor, and wonderful smile. In 2019, Gil left Iowa State for an Associate Professor position at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where he quickly became an integral member of the Section of Ophthalmology in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. As an ACVO member he was an Editorial Board Member for the journal of Veterinary Ophthalmology and served on committees for various organizations. Gil was also active on the international scene, serving as the current President of the International Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology.

Gil’s sudden loss reminds us to cherish time with our loved ones and to provide support in times of need. For those looking to offer their support to Gil's family (Education funds, others), we ask that you consider making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign, and encourage you to please share with your network of friends & family. 100% of funds raised will go directly to his family.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you in advance for your generosity.
