I’m helping to fundraise for Alex, my boyfriend who is looking to get top surgery later this year.
What is top surgery?
For those who don't know, top surgery is a gender-affirming surgery to remove chest tissue. It is also known as masculinizing chest surgery, and is done to reduce gender dysphoria in trans people, and help them feel most comfortable in their appearance. Studies have found that few to no patients regret having top surgery, and instead find it to be liberating.
For Alex, top surgery will also mean that he no longer has to wear a binder. Like many trans men, Alex wears a binder to minimize the appearance of his chest before surgery. While binding is very effective in practice, it also comes with serious risks including difficulty breathing, chest and back pain, and even possible long-term rib damage. Surgery will allow Alex to simultaneously not have to wear a binder and feel comfortable in his appearance, providing the safest long-term option.
In the UK, where Alex lives, NHS-funded top surgery has a waiting time of over two years, though it often ends up being far longer than that, due to the time it takes to get any gender related care. This is why Alex has opted to go to a private surgeon for his surgery, meaning he won’t have to wait ridiculously long on the NHS waiting lists. The cost will include the surgery itself, all the post op care, and any follow up appointments or revisions that will be made after the fact.
Who is Alex? What is his story?
Alex is my lovely boyfriend who is finally hoping to undertake the step of getting top surgery this year. Though he works over 40 hours a week as a twenty year old to pay for this surgery, consultations, the surgery itself, and aftercare are all very expensive and any bit of donations help. Alex has been binding his chest for about three years now, and has been on testosterone for a little less than that. I can personally attest to how wonderful these have both been for him, as I have seen how much more confident and comfortable with himself he has become over time. I am so proud and excited to see the steps he is taking. I also know that finally getting this surgery will be such a load off his chest (literally) and provide a great sense of euphoria, allowing him to exist comfortably and proudly himself in the world.
For those who don’t know him outside of this, Alex is probably one of the coolest and kindest people I know. He is an extremely talented musician (who plays ten instruments, like c’mon!) and singer, he is crazy hard working and when he puts his mind to something he gets it done. Everyone who meets him instantly becomes his best friend, and there is no one I know that is more deserving of this than him.
