On March 4th, 2021 Jade & Ryan welcomed their second daughter Rylee into the world.
Suddenly, within 24 hours, their lives completely turned upside down. Rylee has spent the last 6 weeks at SickKids Hospital enduring extensive tests to search for why she has been involuntarily seizing. In attempt to aid Rylee, the medical team has used a CPAP machine to assist her breathing, experimented with various medications and have inserted an NG tube for feeding. She presents multiple seizures a day; despite the doctors efforts and medications, Rylee will never be seizure free. The severity of Rylee's delays in cognitive and physical development are unknown.
With COVID-19 making matters more challenging, the hospital only permits one parent to see Rylee at a time; leaving them with no physical support at the hospital during the day. Jade has been with Rylee since day one, while Ryan stays at home with their first daughter, Logan. Ryan and Logan make frequent trips to Toronto to see Jade and support each other as a family.
After many tests, Rylee's prognosis is a rare form of progressive Epilepsy called ‘OHTAHARA Syndrome’. This epilepsy is characterized by many hard-to-control seizures and delays in physical and cognitive development. The medical staff at SickKids are currently trying a variety of anti-epileptic drugs, hoping to control as many seizures as they can. They are hoping to begin occupational therapy to help her learn basic skills such as swallowing and feeding.
In the short term, donations you make will be used to help cover the day-to-day costs such as hotel stay, travel, parking and meals. In addition, these contributions will be used for Rylee’s future care: medical costs, in-home medical equipment , accessibility products, resources, therapy, uninsured medication and much more.
