Douglas E. Metz Scholarship Fund

On May 19, 2018, heaven gained a true gentleman. Metz was truly amazing, a kind spirit that embodied all senses of the word. He lived a life full of adventure and was passionate about his horses. Metz loved art, writing, politics, tasting scotch, teaching people about scotch and the beach. But mostly he loved people – as his mother-in-law once said “Doug never met a stranger”.  He founded MidLantic Financial, which has grown to become the largest independent appraisal review firm in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Doug was active in the Sykesville-South Carroll Rotary Club enjoying his role as emcee at the annual Oktoberfest and his work on the scholarship committee. Metz had a huge heart and an even bigger smile on his face whenever he looked your way.  He truly made the world a better place. 

Always seeking to expand his knowledge base and an avid reader his entire life, Douglas lived his life always appreciating and never forgetting the importance education played, particularly one certain English professor in his first year at community college – who taught him that learning to think was the key – not learning to achieve a certain score on the test or memorizing facts for a specific situation. Learning to think.  During his time at the Sykesville-South Carroll Rotary Club, Douglas was most passionate about identifying those worthy students in the South Carroll High Schools to receive our Club’s annual scholarships. Therefore, in honor of that passion, we have now dedicated the Douglas E. Metz Rotary Scholarship for the one student who displays the love of learning and commitment to community that Douglas did – a very special individual, indeed.
