In the early months of the pandemic, like so many other folks, I was laid off from my job, a full-time position at my childhood library that I'd taken a chance on after leaving my previous field. And, again like so many other folks, I've had a rough time re-gaining employment.
The fortunate news: after applying for countless jobs ranging from assistant director positions on college campuses (my previous field) to cashier positions at nearby grocery stores, a fast food place finally offered me a job.
The unfortunate news: nearly ten months of unemployment has depleted my benefits, stimulus, savings, and credit, and the new job isn't going to pay me in time to make what should be my last month of rent before working again.
The number I landed on for this is based on three things:
- One month of rent: $682 (due on Jan. 31st)
- One month of my phone bill (due on Feb. 2nd): $88.43
- Anticipated fees related to the fundraising platform and fundraising timeline; even if I hit my goal, I don't believe I'll be able to collect in time to make my rent payment without late fees (Feb. 5th at the latest)
Anything received that exceeds these three expenses would go toward groceries, additional/overdue utility bills, and household necessities (cat food/litter, laundry, cleaning, etc.).
The past year has been a challenge for so many folks. If you're here and can't help, trust me, I get it. I look forward to the day when I can pay forward the numerous ways folks have been helping me.
