Matthew Edward Murphy is organizing this fundraiser.
My name is Matthew Murphy. My wife, and mother of our 10-year-old son, Cynthia Murphy, is now on the recipient list for an urgent medical necessity double lung transplant. We are middle-class working people, who live in a modest home (1258 square feet) in the East Bay area of San Francisco. In the fall of 2020 she acquired dermatomyositis, a rare, chronic, and uncurable muscle disease (1 in 100,000 incident rate). The myositis particularly attacked her lungs with pneumonitis. She did not respond well to treatments, and, just 8 days ago, was re-admitted to the hospital with worsening lung function. Within a week she was on the recipient list out of emergency medical necessity. She will not survive without new lungs. She has had to stop working, obviously, and our income is cut in half. I will have to go on unpaid medical leave, or even also take personal leave unpaid, as the recovery once the surgery occurs is at least two months. I will gladly be her primary caregiver, and will not be allowed or able to work. Her expected annual out-of-pocket prescription costs, even after insurance, is expected to be $10,000 annually for the rest of her life. We have also been told to expect thousands or tens of thousands of dollars this year for out-of-pocket expenses related to her long-term hospitalizations and the double lung transplant surgery itself. We have to move into San Francisco for her at least six week outpatient recovery, and will have to rent a dwelling and purchase food. This expense is expected to be thousands of dollars. Financial assistance through Go Fund Me would be a tremendous help to save my wife's life, and get us through the next few months, and the rest of this year, and hopefully have some hope for the future. It is possible she is never able to work again. She will spend her 50th birthday either in the hospital or in recovery. Please help our family if you are able.
